Kolkata is getting ready for a packed international football schedule this October, with the Salt Lake Stadium set to host four high-profile fixtures involving the Indian men’s and women’s teams.
The football fever is already building across Kolkata and West Bengal, with supporters from different parts of India expected to make their way to the city for the much-anticipated matches. The upcoming fixtures will see India’s men take on Brazil and Uruguay, while the Indian women’s team will face Russia in two international friendlies.
Four International Fixtures, One Footballing City
The Salt Lake Stadium will be at the centre of the action, hosting four international matches within a span of just over a week.
India’s men’s team will face Brazil on October 3, followed by a clash against Uruguay on October 6. The Indian women’s team will then take on Russia on October 8 and October 11, giving fans four opportunities to watch international football at one of India’s most iconic football venues.
The fixture list has already generated considerable excitement, not just among Kolkata’s football followers but also among fans travelling from other parts of the country.
Kolkata’s Football Culture Takes Centre Stage
The anticipation surrounding the matches was highlighted at a press conference held at the VIP Lounge of the Salt Lake Stadium on September 29.
West Bengal’s Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Youth Services and Sports Department, Dr Indranil Khan, spoke about the city’s deep connection with football and the growing excitement ahead of the fixtures.
The enthusiasm is visible across Kolkata and different parts of West Bengal, with banners and hoardings adding to the build-up. According to Dr Khan, supporters from cities including Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai are also expected to travel to Kolkata for the matches.
That travelling support adds another dimension to what promises to be a major football occasion for the city.
Supporter Arrangements at Salt Lake Stadium
With thousands of spectators expected to attend across the four matchdays, arrangements for fans have also been highlighted ahead of the fixtures.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey addressed some of the stadium-related arrangements, including food and beverage regulations. Spectators will not be permitted to bring food or water from outside the stadium, while food stalls will be available inside the venue.
The influx of supporters from outside Kolkata is expected to further add to the atmosphere around the stadium and across the city.
Special Welcome for the Visiting Teams
The West Bengal Government will also host a State Guest Dinner for the visiting Brazil and Uruguay teams, the Russian women’s team, as well as the Indian men’s and women’s teams during their stay.
With international teams arriving in the city and supporters preparing for the fixtures, Kolkata is set to experience another significant chapter in its long association with the sport.
